Pharmacy Student Foundation Year Placement

We are seeking high calibre graduates to join our yearly training programme. Application is via Oriel only.

At Dean & Smedley, our vision is to be the pharmacy of choice for the communities we serve. We aim to provide high quality pharmacy, healthcare and related services in a way that builds strong and satisfying relationships with our customers, staff, shareholders and the local community.

With 10 branches employing a range of skilled pharmacists and technicians including Independent Prescribers and clinical specialists in anti-coagulation, you will have the opportunity to experience a broad range of clinical service provision to complement your structured, GPhC approved, training programme.

We are committed to invest in the future, including robotic technology which is now in place within some of our pharmacies. We have been training pharmacy students for over 40 years and have a pass rate close to 100%.

We are passionate advocates for the profession and for the development of new pharmacists. During your foundation year programme, you will be fully supported by experienced supervisors to help ensure that you not only meet but also exceed the GPhC requirements.

We have a programme of training and experience to ensure that where possible all GPhC learning outcomes are met by the end of the third quarter of the year leaving time to prepare for the registration exam and for a confident entry into the profession. You will spend 2 weeks with our local hospital partner, Queens Hospital Burton, during which time you will experience a wide range of hospital services, giving you a valuable insight into this sector. You will meet and have the opportunity to work with our independent prescribers, providing private services for our customers in a range of conditions, and you will spend time in our anti-coagulation clinics with our in-house experts.

We use a wide range of training resources including Centre for Pharmacy Post-graduate Education (CPPE) and National Pharmaceutical Association (NPA) material, monthly reflective seminars with clinical experts, company professional training meetings, along with on the job coaching and one-to-one training through the year. Graduates will undertake specific projects, for example, clinical audits, and are encouraged to spend time with other healthcare agencies, including local drug and alcohol services, hospice care and the chance to attend Local Community Pharmacy England (CPE) proceedings. Commercial awareness and skills are developed, but in excess of 90% of the time at work will be spent on professional matters during the training year.

Graduates are encouraged to work together and share experiences during the year as peers, with a strong focus on the Standards for Pharmacy Professionals, and are introduced to the principles and practice of Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation before qualification.

Places are available through Oriel. If you would like further information, please send us a message.
