Ear wax is normal and helps the ear to function healthily. Our ears produce small amounts of wax all the time to replace the old wax that naturally falls out. Sometimes your body can produce too much wax and can cause problems if it builds up and becomes impacted, dry and dense.
Symptoms of earwax build-up include: discomfort, itching, a feeling that the ears are blocked, earache, and hearing loss.
Never push anything down into your ear canal such as cotton buds or fingers.
Not only can it cause damage to the skin and ear drum, but it can also push wax further into the ear where it is unable to escape, making the chance of wax impaction worse.
Ear irrigation (also known as ear syringing) is a technique that involves pushing water through the ear canal to flush out wax. It used to be offered at GP surgeries but it is no longer recommended as a safe option to deal with problem ear wax. Many surgeries no longer offer it as a service.
Microsuction is one of the safest and most effective ways to clean your ears. It works by using a small vacuum tube, operated by a specialist, to gently remove excess wax from your ears.
We offer microsuction earwax removal at our Horninglow pharmacy.
During your appointment we take a history and examine your ears. If wax is found to be a problem, we will use microsuction to remove it. The procedure is simple, and we explain everything as we go along.
Appointments will take up to 30 minutes and will cost £60 for both ears, or £40 if only one ear needs treatment. If a second appointment is needed (this can happen if there is resistant wax), this will be provided free of charge.
You must apply olive oil ear spray for the 5 days before your appointment to soften any hard wax.
Olive oil ear spray, such as Earol or Cl-ear, is available to buy at pharmacies.
Not doing this may result in us being unable to remove wax and additional appointments being required.
Please read the Microsuction Patient Information Leaflet before your appointment.
